Familiarize yourself with any special exhibits before you get there, so you won’t miss out.
For the Natural History Museum, I’d say to give yourself two to three hours, but at the Met…well, one day won’t begin to cover it.
You could break up a day devoted to a visit though with a lunch break in between..
